The president of the Marina Alta Nautical Tourism Association (ATNMA), Ricardo Burriel met with the mayor of Xàbia José Chulvi to address how the entry into force of the new Posidonia protection law will affect the recreational nautical sector.

The new regional law promoted by the regional environment department is currently in the period of resolution of allegations and is expected to be approved before the summer season. In it, the prohibition of anchoring on the Posidonia meadows is established and vessels can only do so on sand or be anchored to a buoy. It also provides for the implementation of a special surveillance service (located in Xàbia) that will ensure compliance with the standard.

Given that the municipality, like others in La Marina Alta, is a preferred destination for nautical tourism, ATNMA and Xàbia Council have laid the foundations to seek suitable solutions that allow the continuity of this economic sector to be compatible with the protection of the environment.

ATNMA has reported that the mayor has confirmed the placement of more anchor buoys for next summer. However, they advocate a general plan of buoys that covers the entire coast of the Marina Alta and that distributes the anchoring of boats throughout the coastline and not only at certain points on the coast of Xàbia and thus avoid overcrowding.

In addition, the mayor has conveyed his support to the association and proposed the creation of a work table in which the municipalities of the Marina Alta coast and the regional departments of Tourism, Environment and Ports can participate and thus find an ideal balance for the safeguarding of both the posidonia meadows and the recreational nautical sector.
