Xàbia Council has installed provisional safety measures along Carretera del San Antonio – the La Plana road – in order to prevent vehicles from parking illegally and guarantee the safety of residents by ensuring safe entry and exit to their homes.

Mayoress Rosa Cardona met with about 100 residents of La Plana at the Casa de la Cultures, accompanied by councillor Juan Ortolá (Citizen Safety), councillor Fátima Jarjor (La Plana representative) and Policía Local Chief Superintendent José Antonio Monfort.

After receiving a number of complaints from residents at the beginning of the weekend, the councillor representative for La Plana informed the mayoress and councillor for Citizen Safety that appropriate safety measures needed to be installed along the road. As a result, the Policía Local, Guardia Civil and volunteers from the Protección Civil placed a line of plastic Jersey barriers together with some cones on the verges of the road between Punt Verd La Plana and the entrance to the Monastery.

The Chief-Superintendent added that the local police would patrol the area during the weekend nights as a deterrent measure but confirmed that his officers have no authority to issue fines since the road is owned by the Generalitat Valenciana.

During the meeting, the mayoress explained that there had been no investment in cleaning and maintaining the zone of La Plana in recent years and considered that the entire area is in “very poor condition”, citing the picnic area and the verges of the road itself. As a result, she pledged to asked the Ministry of the Environment and Territory to invest in the zone to keep the forested areas that surrounded the houses clean.

She also announced that she will be asking the Generalitat Valenciana for the transfer of responsibility of Carretera del Cap de Sant Antoni to the local authority so that the local police can act and issue fines for illegal parking on the verges.

In addition, the provisional barriers will be replaced in the coming weeks by yellow markers similar to those installed along the verges of the road that gives access to Cala de la Granadella and these have already been ordered from the supply company.

Finally, the mayoress called on residents of La Plana to reactivate the neighbourhood association in order to maintain a constant communication channel with the local council so that the various problems being suffered by the zone can be addressed in future meetings.
