Last Saturday night, the official ceremony kicked off two weeks of festivities, religious celebrations, cultural and children’s sports activities that will climax at midnight on Friday 8th September with the iconic aquatic fireworks display that will light up the bay of Xàbia.

The beacons that guide and mark the day-to-day life of the family, of the neighborhood, of devotion and, of course, of the fiesta itself were the recurring theme of the ceremony held on Avenida Lepanto. With Raquel Violero acting as the master of ceremonies, the simile of the different lighthouses that each person has in their lives was staged with different performances in which tradition and innovation were combined, juggling with light and fire and dancing hand in hand with the Victortor and Endanza companies.

During the ceremony, the new members who are joining the Fiesta Commission, more than one hundred volunteers who help organise the festivities, were introduced. The president of the Commission, Vicente Gavilá and the Councilor for Fiestas, Mavi Pérez, presented the insignia of the group, the representative bands as part of the festival and the medal of the Santíssimo Cristo de la Mar and the Mare de Déu de Loreto. Then, during the central moment of the ceremony, the mayoress of Xàbia, Rosa Cardona, rose to the stage to proclaim the new Mayorales and Mayoralesas and present the medals and sashes.

After the most formal part of the ceremony, the representatives of the rest of the local fiestas and other municipalities paid homage to the new Mayorales, including those from Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Gata de Gorgos.

The other local festivities also participated: Casa de Andalucía with its queen, rociera and president, the Fogueres de Sant Joan headed by their Fogueres Queens, Ladies-in-Waiting, Youth Presidents and Presidents of Quintà 2023, as well as the Moors and Christians with their Standard Bearers, Captains and president of the Fiesta Board. In addition, among the attendees were the rest of the local festivals and a large group of associations and local entities.

The event ended with speeches by the president of the Festival Committee, the Councilor for Festivals and the mayoress. The municipal authorities highlighted the effort of the Fiesta Commission to keep alive such an old festival (officially 127 years) and know how to adapt and renew each year.
