An early goal from Xàbia player Sandra Castelló was enough to seal victory for her team Sporting de Huelva against Atlético de Madrid in the Round 23 of the Primera División Femenina Liga Iberdrola.

Defender Castelló scored the winning goal after just 59 seconds, the Xabiera pouncing on a rebound off the crossbar from a free-kick by striker Fatou Kanteh to smash the ball home. The home side, sitting just above the relegation zone before the game, had several more chances to extend the game whilst Atlético, featuring England striker Toni Duggan as a second-half substitute, had their own opportunities to get themselves back into the game, including a shot from Columbian striker Leicy Santos on 9 minutes which was well blocked by Huelva defender Ana Carol.

The victory lifted Sporting Huelva into 11th spot in the table after 23 games, one point behind Valencia and opening up some breathing space from the relegation zone. On Wednesday evening, the side hosts Real Sociedad.

Sandra Castelló is a 27-year-old defensive midfielder from Xàbia who began her career with the local football club before joining Levante UD in 2009, playing for the B side then rising to the ranks of the senior squad in 2011. Two years later, she signed for Sporting Huelva and has made 227 league and cup appearances, scoring six goals.
