Xàbia has recycled more than 50 tons of used textiles in first six months of 2021

Some 228,000 pieces of clothing will be reused or recycled for social environmental purposes.

Thursday 29th July 2021 – PRESS RELEASE with Mike Smith

The selective collection of used textiles and clothing in Xàbia has seen a total of 50,799kg – more than 50 tons – deposited in the containers around the town during the first half of 2021. This amount, which is equivalent to 228,000 garments, will have a second life through reuse or recycling, a project handled by Humana, Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo.

Thanks to the commitment of residents who have deposited clothing, footwear, accessories and home textiles that they no longer use in the Humana containers, a double benefit will be achieved: firstly, one of environmental by reducing the waste that ends up in landfills and reducing CO2 emissions by 161 tons; and secondly, social, since Humana generates indefinite employment for every 30,000kg of textile collected and allocates a percentage of the resources obtained to social projects.

The Department of Services has expressed its appreciation for the involvement of residents in recycling but adds that there is a long way to go since it is estimated that each person throws away between 20kg and 30kg of textiles every year but only one tenth is selectively recovered and recycled.
