As has long been tradition on the evening of the Third Sunday of Lent, the town’s treasured image of Jesús Nazareno descended from the blue-domed chapel of Calvario to the fortress-church of San Bartolomé where it will remain until May 3rd.

Carried on the shoulders of the Brotherhood of the Nazarene and accompanied by La Dolorosa as well hundreds of residents carrying candles, some of whom made the short journey barefoot, the image arrived in the heart of the historic centre to the sound of the new church bells sitting in the church square.

The image will remain in the church over Easter when it will be paraded through the narrow streets of the historic centre of the evening of Good Friday whilst also making the short journey back up the Vía Dolorosa. At the end of April, there will be the traditional festivities in honour of the image, which will include the magical flower crosses, before the image is returned to the chapel of Calvario on the evening of Friday 3rd May, a local public holiday in Xàbia.
