Monday 3rd May 2021 | MIKE SMITH
Today – May 3rd – is a bank holiday in Xàbia and is normally the final day in the celebrations that honour the town’s treasured image of Jesús Nazareno. As night begins to fall, the image is removed from inside the historic church of San Bartolomé and carried on the shoulders of the brotherhood back up the hill to the blue-domed church of Calvario, accompanied by the people of the town carrying candles to the light the way. It’s an emotional sight as darkness falls and the string of lights weaves its way up to the chapel. The whole programme is brought to an end by a spectacular firework display.
