NEXT YEAR 2024 WILL BE THE YEAR OF ANTONI LLIDÓ

The plenary also approved the Strategic Tourism Plan and a motion on 25N.

The November plenary session of Xàbia Town Council has unanimously agreed to declare next year 2024 as “the Year of Antoni Llidó’, the proposal approved by all five parties with municipal representation based on a motion presented by the PSPV-PSOE Xàbia.

Among the approved agreements are:

  1. Declare the year 2024 as ‘Any Antoni Llidó‘ and carry out a series of cultural events inspired by his figure, based on criteria of preserving the memory and human values ​​of a relevant figure for the people of Xàbia.
  2. Debate and put to vote all those proposals linked to the aforementioned activities in the open space that constitute the Information Commissions of Culture, Education and Sports for the corresponding purposes.
  3. The Xàbia City Council undertakes to initiate the corresponding procedures for programming linked to the possible activities to be carried out, taking into account the Fundació Cirne, which is the custodian of Antoni Llidó’s legacy, as a collaborating entity.
  4. Involve all political groups in this and future decisions to be made regarding the celebration of ‘Any Antoni Llidó’.

WHO IS ANTONIO LLIDÓ?

Antonio Llidó Mengual was born in Xàbia in April 1936 and became a Roman Catholic priest in Spain but was forced to leave his country of birth to free himself of the restraints of the Catholic Church and the repression of the dictatorship of Franco. He travelled to Chile to do missionary work, living with the impoverished community of the Quillota province and experiencing the daily struggle to survive which led him to identify with their yearning for social change. As a result, he became active in political movements that worked towards mobilizing the poor to fight for that change. However, after the Pinochet-led coup of September 1973, he was arrested, tortured and executed, his ordeal in the Pinochet torture centres detailed by witnesses who spent time with before his forced disappearance. His death is recorded as October 15th 1974. In June 1998, the high school in Xàbia was renamed IES Antoni Llidó in memory of this priest from the town who was regarded as a committed teacher.

In addition, PP, Ciudadanos por Jávea, PSPV and Compromís per Xàbia approved a motion regarding November 25, International Day for the elimination of violence against women; Vox voted against.

All parties unanimously supported the approval of the strategic Tourism plan 2023-2026. In addition, the plenary session unanimously agreed to ratify the backing of Xàbia Council of the agreement signed between the Generalitat Valenciana and the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces for the “En Movimiento” programme to promote an active, healthy life and physical activity habits, in collaboration with the health sector from the town councils.

Also approved were the technical details of the price update of the project for the execution of the urbanization works of the Mar Azul Partial Plan (in favour of the local government with the abstention of PSPV and Compromís) and the approval for the technical details of the basic project and execution, and environmental license for the construction of the municipal kennel in the Ramblars area, which was supported by all five parties.
