COUNCIL CONFIRMS IT WILL DO MORE TO PREVENT ILLEGAL PARKING OF CAMPER VANS

Councillor assures meeting that new measures are being introduced to prevent illegal parking of these vehicles.

The local council has confirmed that it will be addressing the issue of camper vans and motorhomes setting up camp in the parking zones along the Primer Muntanyar, the coastal road between the port and the Arenal.

The issue was brought up at the monthly council meeting by Carme Català (Compromís) in response to the growing complaints from residents that these vehicles were taking over the beachfront and that signs detailed the municipal bylaw that camper vans, motorhomes, buses and lorries were not permitted to park were not effective enough to deter them.

The councillor for Services, Juanjo García (PP), agreed that the council was not doing enough to prevent the problem and confirmed that, over the next few weeks, the council will be installing a low barrier along the edge of the road, similar to that which had already been erected further down the same road, and restrict access to the parking zone via two entrances, both of which will be fitted with a limited height clearance of 2.10 metres. This solution has been approved by the provincial government which is responsible for the coastal strip and will be applied to both parking zones at either end of the Primer Muntanyar.

The problem has also been highlighted in Cala Granadella where residents have long complained about the owners of camper vans, motorhomes and caravans setting up camp overnight in a protected area, even breaking down barriers and removing signs which clearly state the prohibitions and leaving rubbish strewn across the area.

State regulations prohibit camping and overnight stays anywhere in Spain other than campsites and other areas authorised by the municipality.
