The bearers of the image of Jesús Nazareno, with the collaboration of the Brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno, have commissioned the artistic painting of the interior of the dome of Calvario, an initiative with which they want to contribute to dignify the hermitage of Jesús Nazareno.

The oil paintings bear the signature of the prestigious painter Luis Javier Gayá. The Madrid artist has made four tondos on the pendentives of the dome of the chapel of Calvario in which the four evangelists are represented, paintings of great beauty and that follow a chronological order as they appear in the canonical gospels.

There are four works in oil and gold leaf on canvas. In order for the works to be more neutral and to integrate better with the decoration of the chapel, they have been made with the grisaille technique, used since the 14th century and based on the gray scale. The poetic and lyrical realism that characterize it is observed in them.

The bearers want to thank Luis Javier Gayá, his collaboration and, being aware of his high cache, the low cost that he offered due to his love for Xàbia and his admiration for the Nazarene image. Gayá has received countless national and international awards, including the “Reina Sofía”, the “Espiral de las Artes” and the British Institute award.

The project, which had the authorisation and support of both the Xàbia Council and the Parish Priest of the Parish of San Bartolomé Apóstol, completes the ornamentation of the dome. The bearers wanted to thank all the collaborations that help them to continue with the dignity of the Chapel of Calvario for Jesús Nazareno.
