Sunday 28th November 2021 – XÀBIA AL DÍA with Mike Smith

CD JÁVEA 1-2 CD DÉNIA

CD Jávea is remain in free fall, suffering a third consecutive defeat and one of the most painful of all against CD Denia in a fiercely competitive derby game. It was a day that began with a photo of of friendships, both club’s players and coaching staff coming together just before the kick-off for a “family photo” in front of the biggest crowd of the season so far at the Campo Municipal d’Esports in Xàbia, the atmosphere enlivened by the presence of a xaranga band playing all the best fiesta tunes – as well as a few renditions of the crown favourite “Xàbia”.

Once the game started, that respect between the two clubs seemed to have remained as neither team was prepared to take a risk until a wayward clearance from Dénia keeper Maxi allowed Paolo to push forward towards the Dénia goal but his weak effort was easily saved by the visiting goalkeeper.

Former Jávea player Carlos Ribes soon proved to be the visitor’s danger man, his trademark long throw-ins causing some distress in the Jávea defence and it wasn’t long before one of those launches into the area saw the ball flick off the head of Ferrán to another former Jávea player Panucci on the far post but his effort hit the netting behind the goal.

The strong gusts of wind played its part in the game, bothering both sides although Dénia had a slight advantage in its blowing with them during the first half. And one of those gusts almost claimed an assist just before the break when a speculative shot from Jaume crashed into the woodwork in the top left corner with goalkeeper Josep well beaten, deceived by the erratic flight of the ball.

The second half began with more intensity and, in a repeat of the previous week’s game in Ontinyent, Jávea found themselves conceding two goals in five mad minutes early in the second period. The first was scored on 49 minutes by Panucci at the far post, a corner from the left finding its way through a crowded area to find the former Jávea striker who smashed the ball home to the delight of the travelling fans.

The second Dénia goal arrived barely five minutes later when a stray ball was collected by Carlos Ribes, the veteran midfielder striding forward with confidence to stroke the ball home under the advancing body of Josep to five the visitors an important two goal advantage.

As the band played on, Jávea head coach decided to make some changes, bringing on Juli for Rafael Llamas and Elian from Fran Muñoz to try and give the home side more depth. It appeared to work and Jávea pushed to get themselves back into the game. The first real attempt came when some great work from Javi found himself free to pass to the Paco but the latter was a little too slow to react and the goalkeeper was able to clear the ball, injuring himself in the process.

And then, on 75 minutes, a magnificent cross for Corbolán was headed home by Tali to give the home side some hope. And it seemed the luck might be on Jávea’s side after all when Dénia appeared to have restored their two goal advantage but the effort from Lapeña was ruled offside. But it was brief moment of hope. Nine minutes from time, Paco appeared to fall over a Dénia player and the latter rolled around the pain on the artificial surface, enough of a response for the referee to show Paco a second yellow and Jávea were forced to play the final few minutes with just ten men.

But they still battled and those ten men gave their all right up until the final whistle. As the game ended, the Dénia players ran to the far side of the pitch to celebrate with their fans whilst the home support strolled off disappointed, knowing that the run of injuries has seriously dampened hope of claiming a promotion play-off spot.

Jávea face leaders CF Gandía in the next league game in two weeks time but next up is a Fourth Round Nostra Copa game against CF UD Calpe.
