A penalty save in the opening quarter of an hour was the only real action of this otherwise dull derby game.

A fine penalty save by Tonet was the brightest moment of an otherwise dull derby game at the Estadio Diego Mena. It seems that these derby games are no longer what they once were for the spectators arrived in dribs and drabs so the stands were hardly packed out for this vital game for both sides.

The match itself proved to be a masterclass in defensive strategy, both sides seemed to place more importance on not losing the game than winning it. Still, there was some notable clashes in the opening 15 minutes, two cards for the visitors and a penalty for the home, although it took a little consultation with his assistant before the referee was confident enough to point to the spot. Former Jávea player Panucci was given the responsibility but his low shot was well-saved by Tonet. The rest of the first half passed without much opportunity for both sides, the only notable moment happening in the 40th minute when Dénia’s Paco – another former Jávea player – was shown a red card for a second bookable offence.

The second half brought little action, although Jávea’s Mario went close to open the scoring but his effort was well blocked by the defensive line. The home side battled to maintain control of the game but did little to threaten Tonet’s goal. And as the minutes ticked away, Jávea’s Acbo and Mario might have stolen all three points had Dénia keeper Edu (yep, another former rojiblanco) not been on form to push away both efforts.
