CD Jávea 0-0 CF La Nucia ‘B’

The rain held off and there was even a little sunshine as football returned after the Fallas break with CD Jávea hosting one of the season’s serious promotion hopefuls CF La Nucia ‘B’, who arrived in town boasting a run of six successive victories. The home side itself had chalked up six games without defeat so it was likely to be an interesting game.

Both sides began strong, passing the ball well around the middle of the park, whilst the defences worked comfortably to deal with any incursions into their territory. On 11 minutes La Nucia finally forced their way through the defensive line and won the first corner of the game but the lofted ball into the six-yard box was well cleared by the home side.

Five minutes later, Jávea won their first corner of the game, the low clever ball into a crowded box, eluding many outstretched legs before rebounding off a defender and straight into the grateful arms of the keeper. La Nucia went straight down the other end and forced two successive corner kicks, the first cleared well but behind for another corner from the other side, the second well cleared by an increasingly confident defence well-marshalled by Paolo and Caturla, the latter stepping in to cover the departure of the hugely influential Castells.

On 21 minutes, Jávea might have taken a deserved lead after some great work from Elian on the left flank who charged strongly down to the line before twisting his body around the ball and floated a delightful cross into the area where Javi found himself in plenty of space but fired his volley well over the bar. Eight minutes later, Elian himself found himself in a position to take a shot but the ball ended up in the arms of the keeper.

The visitors had their own moments to take the lead. On 31 minutes, they forced another corner which was cleared by Jávea but only for the ball to drop to Ibáñez on the edge of the area but his powerful half-volley flew just wide of the left post. A few minutes later, another attack saw the ball fly harmlessly wide from 20 yards, the last real action of the first half.

And for all the chances in that opening period, the second half proved to be a disappointment in terms of opportunities which both sides cancelling themselves out in the middle of the park to the frustration of the players and four of the match’s seven yellow cards were dished out in the second half. It was not a memorable 45 minutes of football, not because it was devoid of action but because two good sides just could find the right moment to launch an attack. However the most welcoming moment of the second half was a few very brief seconds right before the final whistle when former captain Aldo, who has made more than 300 appearances for the club, took to the field to the cheers of the faithful in the stand.

Next weekend, CD Jávea face a very tricky away game at fourth place CF UE Tavernes, who won 3-1 at second place Ontinyent 1931 CF at the weekend.
