Several Arenal business owners have received a warning of an alleged scam in which a threatening phone call suggests that power will be switch off if bank details and invoice data are not provided.

The scam call is via a mobile phone number and the caller warns the business owner that if they don’t provide this information, the power will be cut off within 30 minutes. Faced with such a threat, the owner feels compelled to hand over the data, to avoid being cut off and losing everything. Once the data has been provided, strange charges appear in the bank account for several amounts.

XAD has confirmed that several businesses in Xàbia have fallen for the scam and that the Guardia Civil has opened an investigation to track down the scammers.

It is not the only alleged scam that has been operating recently. In recent weeks, victims have been receiving phone calls allegedly from the regional health ministry with details of an appointment to receive the third booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine. An SMS is sent to a mobile phone in which a link opens a door to a virus that hacks the device and attempts to steal the personal data held on it.
