Xàbia’s celebrates 9 d’Octubre with awards honouring tradition and community
Xàbia marked the Día de la Comunitat Valenciana with the 29th edition of the Premis Vila de Xàbia, recognizing local organizations and individuals for their dedication to culture, social service, and the town’s identity.
Commitment and tradition filled the heart of the historic centre of Xàbia of Friday evening during the celebration of 9 d’Octubre, the Día de la Comunitat Valenciana. Although the ceremony was delayed a few days due to weather, the town was able to hold the 29th Premis Vila de Xàbia 2025, awards that honour the dedication and contributions of local organizations and individuals to the community and cultural identity.
This year, the municipal council unanimously agreed to award the prizes to the Fundación Residencia Hermanos Cholbi and the Penya ‘El Gerrot’, two organizations with long-standing social and cultural impact in the town.

Penya El Gerrot was recognized for preserving and promoting Xàbia’s traditions. Since its founding in 1988, the group has organized the Cremà dels Trastos Vells, a highlight of the Fogueres de Sant Joan festivities, declared of local tourist interest. The tradition, rooted in rituals of fire and renewal, has become a central feature of the festival, especially La Nit dels Focs, the most magical night of the celebrations.
Juan Torres ‘Yogue’, a longtime friend of the group, recalled its humble beginnings: “It started when we were nineteen, as a ritual to burn the old and start a new era in an empty area,” he said. Now, the group, together with neighbors, has turned the event into a symbol of community and continuity, honoring past members who are no longer with us.
Meanwhile, the Fundación Residencia Hermanos Cholbi, founded in 1895, received the award for over a century of service to older adults and vulnerable residents. The foundation has become a benchmark in elder care, providing medical, nursing, psychological, social work, and physiotherapy support. The institution continues the vision of Carlos Cholbi i Bañuls, its founder, who aimed to “shelter the sick, needy, and helpless, whether from Xàbia or the surrounding area.” The award was collected by Miguel Bolufer, the foundation secretary and descendant of the founders, along with Carmen Ramos.

The ceremony, presented by Amadeu Ros and accompanied by the Colla Xirimitab’s, highlighted the symbolic value of the awards. Culture Councillor Mavi Pérez (CpJ) said, “These prizes are a gesture of gratitude to the people who make Xàbia better. Our town is defined by its people.” Mayor Rosa Cardona (PP) added, “Xàbia has individuals and associations whose dedication makes us proud. Today, we celebrate unity and our shared identity.”
The event included video presentations for each awardee and concluded with a dance performance, Al Punto, rounding off a day of celebration, pride, and community spirit.
