Xàbia to implement sustainable development goals in municipal policies
Deputy mayor Perez stressed that the local government is committed to quality and sustainability in Xàbia.
Xàbia Council has begun the process of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the Agenda Urbana Española AUE (Spanish Urban Agenda) in municipal policies over the coming years, a process in which it will be able to rely on technical support from UNED Dénia.
The Agenda Urbana Española AUE is the roadmap that sets up the strategy and actions to be carried out over the next few years until 2030 in order to transform Spanish towns and cities into friendly, welcoming, healthy, economically active and socially balanced areas in which to live together.
On Wednesday, the plenary hall in Xàbia hosted an event from the project entitled “Her voice, her power, our future! Women leading the way to sustainability” which was led by UNED Dénia along with eight other cities in Poland, Romania, Latvia , Italy, Slovenia, Ukraine, France and Spain.
The event had two objectives: firstly, to increase the participation of women in civic life and in the creation of green and sustainable local policies; and secondly, to contribute to the situation of the Agenda Urbana, the New European Bauhaus Initiative and the European Green Deal.
The European Green Deal provides a lifeline for Europe out of the COVID-19 pandemic, financed by one third of the €1.8 trillion investments from the NextGenerationEU Recovery Plan and the EU’s seven-year budget, transforming the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy.
Specifically, this project works on the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Cities Network, promoting inclusion and gender equality in all areas of society in line with EU values as well as promoting awareness and knowledge of the rights of EU citizens with emphasis on the gender perspective and social inclusion.
The UNED Chair of Equality and Agenda 2030 has developed the “Xàbia SDG Comprehensive Plan” that outlines the lines along which the local council has to work to adapt policies to the Agenda Urbana Española AUE and the UN SDGs.
Deputy mayor Mavi Pérez stressed that this plan will becomes the guide that the local government will have for the coming years and commented that “we are going to align all actions and strategic plans with the SDGs and their goals“.
She stressed the commitment of the government team to equality and sustainability in the town, adding that “we continue to adopt the necessary measures to make our municipality more sustainable and resilient, promoting the improvement of the quality of life of the residents as well as the care of our environment”.
