Xàbia to Host First Sub-1800 FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament This Weekend
Players from across the region will compete over six rounds at the Portal del Clot multi-purpose hall.
Xàbia Council has announced the IRT Sub-1800 de Xàbia, a chess tournament that will bring together players from across the region on the weekend of Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th March at the Multui-Purpose Room in the Portal del Clot complex.
The event was presented at a press conference attended by councillor responsible for Sports, Toni Molina (PP), Club d’Escacs Xàbia secretary Francisco Morató, and club representative Toni Bisquert, who outlined the details of the competition and highlighted its aim of positioning Xàbia as a gathering point for chess enthusiasts.
The tournament will follow a six-round Swiss system with a time control of 30 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, and results will be valid for standard FIDE rating (Elo). Participation is limited to players with an Elo rating below 1800.

One of the event’s main features will be the live online broadcast of the top ten boards, allowing fans to follow games in real time from anywhere. Games will be available on the platforms Chess.com and Lichess, while standings and results will also be published through the Info64 tournament platform.
Registration costs €25 until March 12 and €30 afterward, with entries accepted via email through the organizers.
The organizers explained that the tournament aims to promote chess and encourage participation among both amateur and federated players, combining competitive play with a social atmosphere in the coastal setting of Xàbia. Events such as this continue to expand the municipality’s sporting calendar, reinforcing its role as a venue for competitions that blend sport, tourism and community engagement.
