Xàbia Steps Up Winter Wildfire Prevention at Camí Vell de Teulada
Forest clearing, safety buffers and even goats form part of a broader plan to protect people, homes and nature.
Xàbia Council, through its Department of the Environment, has begun new forest maintenance and wildfire prevention work in the Camí Vell de Teulada area, as part of the Municipal Wildfire Prevention Plan.
The work includes clearing and thinning forest growth, removing dead pine trees, and improving the surrounding area to reduce the build-up of dry vegetation. A 25-metre safety buffer is also being maintained around homes, a key measure to protect both people and property in the event of a fire. The council notes that carrying out this work in winter makes it safer and more effective, helping to reduce risks and ensuring the land is prepared well before the high-risk fire season begins.
These actions add to other initiatives already underway across the municipality, such as work in the Parque Natural del Montgó and the Granadella area, as well as innovative, sustainable forest management measures. One standout example is the use of more than 250 goats grazing in the Plana del Montgó, naturally controlling dry vegetation and lowering fire risk in an environmentally friendly way.
The local council stresses that wildfire prevention is an absolute priority. These efforts aim to safeguard residents, homes and the future of the municipality, bringing together safety, sustainability and care for Xàbia’s natural heritage
