Xàbia starts renovation of the Casa dels Xolbi, also known as ‘Casa Candelaria’
The project has been awarded to Víctor Tormo SL, a Xàtiva-based company with more than 25 years of experience in heritage restoration.
This month marks the start of long-awaited restoration work on the Casa dels Xolbi, also known as Casa Candelaria, a 15th-century Gothic mansion and one of Xàbia’s most valuable historic landmarks. For years, the building had been at serious risk of collapse, with cracks so severe that its north façade had to be propped up with metal buttresses. Now, it begins a new phase that will both recover its former splendor and safeguard it for future generations.
The project has been awarded to Víctor Tormo SL, a Xàtiva-based company with more than 25 years of experience in heritage restoration. The firm’s portfolio includes the restoration of the 13th-century bell tower of Gandia’s Collegiate Church, a project that highlights its expertise in conserving unique historic structures.
In Xàbia, the Casa dels Xolbi project goes beyond structural reinforcement and architectural restoration. The building will also be adapted for a new public use: once the work is complete, it will house a visual arts workshop school, adding an important cultural and educational facility to the town.
It is worth noting that the local government team had revise and update the project when it took control of the local council as the original plan showed significant shortcomings in accessibility and functionality, including the absence of an elevator and a lack of restrooms on some floors. The revised version corrects these deficiencies, ensuring the restored building meets all regulatory requirements as well as modern standards for universal accessibility.
