Xàbia Pushes for Year Round Fire Brigade Coverage
Xàbia Town Hall and Alicante Provincial Council study gradual expansion of local fire unit’s operational calendar.
Mayor Rosa Cardona has held a working meeting with the president of the Diputación de Alicante, alongside the town’s councillor responsible for Emergencies, Juan Ortolà (CpJ), and the head of the Policía Local de Xàbia, José Antonio Monfort, to address the reinforcement of the provincial fire service in the municipality.
During the meeting, the mayor once again called for an extension of the annual operational period of the Provincial Fire Brigade detachment stationed in Xàbia. The aim is to align coverage with the town’s current reality and the full range of emergencies recorded throughout the year, a request the town hall has been making for some time.
Cardona stressed that the need for extended service goes beyond the risk of wildfires. Firefighters are also required for house fires, rescues, traffic accidents, and other urgent incidents demanding immediate response. She pointed out that emergencies are no longer confined to the summer months. Increasingly, they spill into spring and autumn, amid higher temperatures and shifting weather patterns.

Both administrations are now examining a progressive extension of the unit’s operational calendar within this same year. In addition to the traditional summer deployment, the service is expected to cover a broader period. A gradual rollout over the coming years is also being considered, with the long term goal of ensuring the detachment remains operational all year round.
Councillor Juan Ortolà underlined the importance of medium and long term planning to guarantee an effective response to all types of emergencies. Meanwhile, police chief José Antonio Monfort highlighted the strong coordination between security and emergency services, noting that extended coverage would improve response times not only for forest fires but also for urban incidents and other urgent interventions.
The mayor thanked the president of the Provincial Council for his openness and expressed confidence that joint efforts between the two institutions will steadily move toward achieving a year round operational presence, strengthening safety in Xàbia and enhancing protection for residents and visitors alike.
