Xàbia honours Fundación Residencia Hermanos Cholbi and Penya El Gerrot
The municipal awards, presented on October 9th – Día de la Comunitat Valenciana – recognize outstanding contributions to Xàbia’s social and cultural life.
Xàbia Council has unanimously approved the recipients of the Premis 9 d’Octubre Vila de Xàbia 2025, honouring two organizations deeply woven into the town’s social and cultural fabric: the Fundación Residencia Hermanos Cholbi and Penya El Gerrot.
The Fundación Residencia Hermanos Cholbi, founded in 1895, has provided continuous care for the elderly and vulnerable in Xàbia for over 125 years. Its work spans medicine, nursing, psychology, social services, and physiotherapy, all while maintaining its founder Carlos Cholbi i Bañuls’ mission: to shelter the poor, sick, disabled, and helpless, whether residents or natives of Xàbia.
Penya El Gerrot, founded in 1988, has played a crucial role in preserving local traditions. The group organizes the annual Cremà dels Trastos Vells (Bonfire of Junk) voluntarily, a key ritual of fire and transformation within the Fogueres de Sant Joan, a fiesta of Local Tourist Interest. Their efforts help connect past and present, ensuring Xàbia’s cultural heritage continues to thrive.
