The commander of the Balcón al Mar Volunteer Fire Brigade, Terry Curran, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his services to firefighting and his contribution to public safety in the municipality of Xàbia.

The recognition acknowledges more than ten years of leadership at the head of a volunteer fire brigade operating in one of the municipality’s largest residential areas, safeguarding both local residents and visitors.

Beyond his operational role, the award also highlights his strong involvement in training and fire prevention awareness, through talks and seminars delivered to the local community, aimed at reducing risks and improving emergency response.

Following the announcement of the appointment, Curran stated that the honour represents the collective effort of the Balcón al Mar Volunteers, past and present, and emphasized the importance of cooperation between communities and emergency services in Spain.

The British Empire Medal, a honourary title forms part of His Majesty the King’s New Year Honours List, is awarded to individuals who have made a meritorious contribution to their community or demonstrated sustained, hands-on service at a local level. It recognises work that has had a meaningful and lasting impact, often carried out quietly and with dedication over many years.

Xàbia Council has also expressed its gratitude for his commitment, bravery, and spirit of service to the local community.
