The PSOE-PSPV socialist opposition in Xàbia has officially triggered calls for an extraordinary plenary session aimed at discussing the transfer of the town’s desalination plant back to public management through AMJASA.

Following the last council plenary, spokesperson José Chulvi submitted the required signatures last Friday morning to force the session, which will focus solely on the desalination plant’s reversion. In the submission, the Socialists emphasized the plant’s critical role: “The desalination plant is an essential infrastructure to guarantee the water supply in our municipality. Its importance is even greater in the context of climate change, water scarcity, and growing population pressure.” Currently, the facility is managed privately, costing the local council tens of thousands of euros each month. The concession period for private operation has already expired, and an extension is currently in place.

The Socialists cited the municipal government’s inaction as the reason for requesting the extraordinary session, seeking clarity on when and how management will be returned to AMJASA after months of unexplained delays.

Tensions have already surfaced within the governing coalition. Mayor Rosa Cardona’s coalition partners, Ciudadanos por Jávea, issued a statement on June 13th, granting the government “two to three months” to complete the transfer, noting that “the conditions for reversion have been met and the file is at an advanced stage of processing.”
