The 2025-26 school year has started on a high note for little Olaya López Goberna, Xàbia’s “girl with glass bones.” CEIP Mediterrània has now installed a stairlift, allowing Olaya to access her first-floor classroom without the previous struggles.

Until now, her mother or a teacher sometimes had to carry her when she experienced pain attacks and couldn’t climb the stairs on her own. The lift serves as a temporary solution while the long-promised school lift, approved by the Regional Ministry of Education, is still in the bidding process.

Olaya’s mother, Laura Goberna, had raised the issue at the July plenary meeting of the local council, seeking a temporary fix. She also reached out to a company in Callosa d’En Sarrià willing to install a mechanical stairlift for the new school year. In August, the board of directors of the municipal water company AMJASA approved full funding for the stairlift, ensuring it was installed in time for Olaya’s return to school.

Speaking on her Facebook account, Laura Goberna expressed her gratitude:

“A huge thank you to all the people who helped me give my voice: to all the people of Xàbia, Jose Chulvi, Isabel Moreno, the media outlets Levante-EMV, À Punt, Dénia FM 92.5, COPE Dénia Marina Alta, the company Total Access of Callosa d’En Sarria for their fast quote and flawless installation, to mayor Rosa Cardona for keeping her promise, and above all AMJASA and its manager José Marcos Pons for fully funding this temporary project to ensure accessibility for my daughter and all children who may need it until the long-awaited lift is completed, which is currently in the bidding process. Thank you again, a million times over. Without all this help, it would have been impossible.”

Thanks to this swift intervention, Olaya can now safely reach her classroom while the permanent lift project progresses.
