Rotary Club Jávea organises traditional walk against polio

The short walk will start in the port and finish in the Arenal and participants are asked to donate 10 euros to the cause.

October 24th is World Polio Day, a global day to raise awareness and resources for the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Although the disease does not currently affect Spain, thanks to an extensive vaccine coverage, it is a different story for other countries who have not been able to offer an immunisation campaign.

There are still people among us who suffered from the disease in the 60s and 70s of the last century and remind us that is is cruel illness due to the prolonged suffering and the consequences that it causes. As a result, every year communities, associations, civil societies, governments and partners around the world organize events to mark the occasion and draw attention to the opportunity to rid the world of an infectious disease once and for all.

Rotary International, which includes all Rotary Clubs across the world, have been financing a global vaccination programme since 1985 in collaboration with other organisations, such as WHO, UNICEF, GDC, GAVI and the Gates Foundation.

This Sunday 22nd October, Rotary Club Jávea will be holding in traditional annual walk against polio, starting at 10.00am in the port on the promenade in front of the Noray restaurant. The walk will proceed along the coast to the Arenal promenade. Participants can make a registration donation of 10 euros, which will go towards the continued funding of vaccination programmes in country in which polio circulates.
