Portitxol group releases new work reviving Xàbia’s musical heritage with local schoolchildren
New Christmas track features singer Paco Muñoz and reconnects generations through melodies rediscovered after forty years.
The Grup de Danses Portitxol de Xàbia has released ‘Xorriu, Xorriu’, the second preview from their upcoming album ‘Ha Arribat el Nadal’, a project that revives traditional melodies from the Marina Alta and Baixa and brings generations together through music. This new release features a special collaboration with Valencian singer Paco Muñoz and with 5th and 6th grade pupils from CEIP Port de Xàbia, once again placing the school at the heart of transmitting the town’s musical heritage.
The school’s involvement is no coincidence. In the 1980s, CEIP Port de Xàbia took part in an educational initiative in which students travelled around town recording the songs preserved by older residents: lullabies, work songs, fiesta tunes, serenades and Christmas carols like this one.
Forty years later, the Grup Portitxol is reviving that legacy and bringing it back to life through the voices of today’s children at the very same school that took part in the original project. ‘Xorriu, Xorriu’ stands as a direct tribute to the children of yesterday and today and to everyone who has kept the town’s music alive.
The new work also features a special contribution from Paco Muñoz, a key figure in Valencian music and a touchstone for several generations. His voice joins that of the CEIP Port de Xàbia pupils, creating a blend full of warmth, authenticity and shared memory.
The new album ‘Ha Arribat el Nadal’ showcases the musical heritage of the Marina region, reinterpreted by the Grup Portitxol with the rondalla, the colla and numerous guest collaborators. The project aims to revive oral tradition, strengthen intergenerational ties and ensure the continuity of a repertoire that forms part of the area’s cultural identity.
