Step into the riveting world of Doubt: A Parable, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by John Patrick Shanley that crackles with tension and moral conflicts. The playwright, from the Bronx, had a turbulent childhood. He was thrown out of St. Helene’s kindergarten and expelled from Cardinal Spellman High School, so has some experience of the hard knocks of life, which no doubt helped him become the successful author of several award-winning plays.
Set in a Catholic school in 1964, this masterfully crafted play pits certainty against ambiguity, tradition against change and conviction against compassion. One of Shanley’s family members was molested by a priest, but he wasn’t interested in dramatising real-life cases.
With razor-sharp dialogue and unforgettable characters, Doubt invites audiences to wrestle with their own beliefs in a story which is as relevant today as ever. This is theatre that doesn’t just entertain: it challenges, inspires and stays with you long after the curtain falls.
