Our Town is an American classic by Thornton Wilder who wanted to impart the idea that we live life without really appreciating what it has to offer. Once we die, and are able to see what we had, it is too late. Major themes of the play include mortality, appreciating life, companionship plus love, marriage, and the circle of life. Performed for over 80 years, it speaks across generations, localities and cultures.

Wilder called this his favourite out of all his works, but complained that it was rarely done right, insisting that: “It should be performed without sentimentality or ponderousness — simply, dryly, and sincerely.”

Director Claire Schoonover will no doubt have noted those comments and has a stellar cast. Arabella Wallace, who plays Emily Webb, is already well-known to Jávea audiences with a variety of comedic [Blithe Spirit] and serious roles [The Long Road] under her young belt. She also stage-managed The Last Tango in Little Grimley.

We first met Dino Theodoor Bramsted, as Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast; this time he plays George Gibbs. Theo is a seasoned theatre actor and singer whose passion began early. He trained extensively in acting and vocals, excelling in diverse productions with notable roles in Evita, Carousel, A View from the Bridge, and The Sound of Music. He seamlessly moves between drama and musical theatre.

Don’t miss this timeless and moving drama. “We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars . . . everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings.”

The Jávea Players’ production will be performed from 29th October to 1st November [matinée and evening performances on the Saturday] at the Unión Musical in Gata de Gorgos. Tickets: €15, Gala Night €20 Cava and canapés after the show. See website https://javeaplayers.com/ for further details.
