When certainty collides with doubt, truth takes the stage. Doubt: A Parable is the 2005 Pulitzer-prize winner penned by John Patrick Shanley, which is bound to provoke thought: a play which will move you, challenge you, and stay with you, long after the curtain falls. It ran for 525 performances on and off Broadway.

Set in a Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964, this masterfully crafted play pits certainty against ambiguity, tradition against change and conviction against compassion. Sister Aloysius, [played by Lesley Davies] the iron-fisted headmistress of St. Nicholas Church School, suspects a progressive priest of inappropriate behaviour. Doubt can be an insidious sentiment, eating away at rationality until truth becomes distorted.

Lesley has been a member of Jávea Players since 2017. She came along with no acting experience, except for being a drama queen at home, and enjoys being part of any production whether on stage or behind the scenes. Perhaps most remembered for her comedic capabilities in I Colitis and Look Out He’s Got a Gun!, she’s now very convincing in this serious play.

An acting workshop with Jávea Players ignited Beate Hoffman’s passion for theatre. Since then she has been cast in different types of plays including comedy and musical. She plays a nun in this tense drama.

“Doubt is a lean, potent drama . . . passionate, exquisite, important, and engrossing.” ― Linda Winer, Newsday.
