“Nobody very remarkable ever come out of it, s’far as we know. The earliest tombstones in the cemetery up there on the mountain say 1670-1680. There are Grovers and Cartwrights` and Gibbses and Herseys; same names as are around here now.”

So begins Our Town, the compelling play by Thornton Wilder about everyday life in an everyday town, which could be in the US, here, Asia, or Africa. Average people going about their life, mostly unremarkable, but then if you think about it, we could say that about most of us. Some attain ‘greatness’ but the majority bumble along and face the grave feeling mostly content about what they have achieved.

The play explores the universal themes of life, love, and death through the seemingly ordinary lives of the residents of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. It follows the Gibbs and Webb families, particularly the young lovers Emily and George, over twelve years, highlighting their daily routines, their romance, and ultimately, death. Through this simple story, Wilder encourages audiences to appreciate the beauty and significance of everyday moments and the interconnectedness of human existence.

Dr Frank Gibbs is played by Tony Sim who has lived in Moraira for 22 years. He first joined the Jávea Players for Amadeus in 2003. His main interest is musical theatre, last appearing as the village idiot in The Jávea Players’ Pantomime in February. He feels that being promoted to the beloved doctor is a considerable step up in the world for him.

Alee Reed plays Myrtle Webb. She recently arrived from New York where she was in National Tours of Gypsy, Mame, Big and Jolson and the European Tour of 42nd Street. She was choreographer for Jávea Players’ Beauty and the Beast. When she’s not onstage, you can find Alee teaching Barre and Swing classes.

Our Town recently finished on Broadway and in spring next year the Welsh National Theatre is performing it at the Rose Theatre in Kingston, London: with  a Welsh slant, not least because Micheal Sheen is the Stage Manager/Narrator.

You don’t need to travel so far as Jávea Players is presenting this masterpiece in the Unión Musical in Gata de Gorgos, 29th October to 1st November [matinée and evening performance on Saturday]. The Box office opens on 26th September, tickets: €15, Gala Night €20 Cava and canapés after the show.
