The Regional Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure, and Territory has launched a tender for a service contract to draft the basic project aimed at improving the functionality of the CV-734 Carretera de Gata and its connections with the CV-740 Carretera de Benitatxell and CV-742 Camí Cabanes / Carretera del Portitxol in Jávea. The contract is valued at €344,978.45 and will span 24 months.

The Director General of Road Infrastructure, Mª José Martínez Ruzafa, explained that the project “aims to tackle the challenges of traffic flow, travel times, and road safety on the access routes to Jávea, particularly during the busy summer months,” adding that it will be carried out “while minimizing environmental impact.”

Jávea has seen a significant increase in vehicle traffic, especially during the summer, as its population has grown fivefold. Access to the town and its residential areas from the AP-7 is currently via the Ondara and Benissa interchanges on the N-332, as well as the CV-734 and the CV-740 and CV-742 roads which are maintained and administered by the Diputación de Alicante.

The N-332, which links the AP-7 motorway to the CV-734, continues to experience heavy traffic, causing problems in nearby towns such as Ondara and Gata de Gorgos.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is preparing plans for a new AP-7 connection with the N-332 in Pedreguer and Gata de Gorgos. This project will reduce traffic on the N-332, enhance road safety, and link the new interchange with the CV-734, the main access road to Jávea. As Martínez Ruzafa emphasized, “this is a priority project to provide a comprehensive solution, complementing the work being carried out by the Ministry.”

Interestingly, back in December 2022, javeamigos.com published an “inocentes” article – the Spanish equivalent of an April Fool’s joke – claiming that the regional authorities had already approved a direct link from Jávea to the AP-7 motorway – click here to read it. While it was intended as a playful prank, it now seems almost prophetic, given that it has now been officially proposed.
