CHRISTMAS LOTTERY 2025 | El Gordo falls in León

This morning – Monday 22nd December – Spain’s magical Christmas Lottery “El Gordo” is taking place, as it has done do for more than 200 years. The biggest lottery in the world by total prize fund – over €2.7 billion in 2024 and 2025 – the chance of winning “the big one” is 1 in 100,000, whilst the chance of winning any prize is about 1 in 6.5, much higher than many other big lotteries. So it’s no surprise that more than 24 million people, two-thirds the population of Spain, participate each year, spending around €59 to €76 on average on tickets.

The number 79432 has won El Gordo, the top prize, each décimo worth €400,000 gross (€328,000 net after taxes). That’s €20,000 gross (€16,400 net) for every euro played. In total, the 198 series of 79432 distribute €792 million, accounting for 28.6% of the prize pool for the draw. Most of the prize went to the province of León: 117 series were sold in La Bañeza, 50 series in Villablino, and 15 series in La Pola de Gordón. The remaining 16 series were sold at Administración No. 246 in Madrid.

The number 70048 has won the second prize. Each décimo of 70048 is worth €125,000 gross (€108,000 after tax). For every euro wagered, the return is €6,250 gross (€5,400 net). The 198 series of number 70048 distribute a total of €245 million. This second prize was the first of the major prizes to be drawn at 9.21am. All 198 series of this number were sold by Administración No.16 in Madrid.

The number 90693 has won third prize with each décimo worth €50,000 gross (€48,000 net after the lottery tax). That’s €2,500 gross (€2,400 net) for every euro played. In total, the 198 series of 90693 distribute an accumulated €99 million. This third prize was widely sold across Spain, however Administración No. 1 in Santa Fe (Granada) won €25 million, while Administración No. 1 in Igorre (Vizcaya) won €24.15 million.

The number 78477 was the first of the two fourth prizes to be drawn. Each décimo of 78477 is worth €20,000. That’s €1,000 for every euro played. Because this prize is below €40,000, it is exempt from taxes, meaning winners will receive the full prize amount. The number 78477 was sold widely across Spain, although most of the prize went to Cazorla (Jaén). It was also sold in Getafe, San Lorenzo del Escorial, and Madrid; Badalona (Barcelona), Burgos, Leioa (Vizcaya), Olot (Girona), Segovia, Toledo, as well as Alaquàs, Mislata, and Valencia.
