Beach handball league kicks off in Xàbia this weekend with memorial to Ivan Almazan
More than 800 athletes and 55 teams from across the Comunidad Valenciana will be competing on the sand of the Arenal beach.
The Ivan Almazan Handball Tournament will be taking place over this weekend May 17th/18th on the sand of the Playa del Arenal, an event which marks the start of this year’s beach handball league. This edition is especially moving, since it bears the name of Ivan Almazan, a resident of Xàbia who passed away recently and left a deep mark on the local handball community.
Ivan Almazan was president of the Xàbia Handball Club and a key figure in promoting this sport in the municipality. Among his initiatives is the creation of the School Handball League, which has been a resounding success and has served to further promote handball among young people. His involvement has ensured this sport remains a benchmark in Xàbia.
During the presentation, Miguel Soria, representative of the Valencian Handball Federation, emphasized that Xàbia will be the first host of this year’s regional league. A total of 55 teams from the Alevin, Infantil, Cadete, Juvenil, and Senior categories will participate, more than 800 athletes who will compete between Friday and Saturday in the privileged setting of the beach of the Arenal.
Pep Hierro, coach of the Xàbia Handball Club, emphasized how special this tournament is for the entire local handball community. “This tournament remembers and pays tribute to Ivan Almazan, a person who gave everything to this sport in our town. I encourage everyone to come and enjoy the atmosphere and the sporting spectacle on the beach,” he said.
