A Fresh Coat for a Local Legend: Xàbia’s Chorroll Gets Ready to Shine Again
After decades as a familiar landmark, the historic fishing boat Chorroll is set for a €63,000 restoration, a careful spruce-up that honours Xàbia’s deep maritime roots
If boats could talk, the Chorroll would have plenty of sea stories to tell. For more than twenty years, this old fishing vessel has sat quietly in the little garden alongside the roundabout in Avenida del Port, weathering the sun, salt, and the occasional selfie from passers-by.
After decades of hard work at sea, the boat became a local landmark, a wooden reminder of Xàbia’s proud maritime past. And it’s an impressive sight: 24 metres long, 7 wide, and another 7 high. It’s still solid, but time has left its mark. Some of the wooden beams are cracked, and the paint is peeling.

Now, it’s finally getting the care it deserves. The local council has launched a €63,000 restoration project to bring the Chorroll back to life. The technical team behind the plan clearly has salt water in their veins; their report even mentions replacing eight barraganetes, the uppermost pieces of a boat’s frame.
Once the contract is signed, the restoration is expected to take about two months. The team will use pine wood, and the deck rail will get a fresh splash of blue, a subtle touch that will help this grand old boat shine again under the Mediterranean sun.
