The Arts Society Marina Alta has announced details of their next lecture which will be about the Spanish artist, architect and sculptor César Manrique. The talks, which will be hosted in Moraira and Xàbia as usual, will be taking place on Wednesday 8th April and will be presented by Dr. Angela Chantry.

César Manrique (1919–1992) was a visionary Spanish artist, architect, and sculptor, celebrated above all for his groundbreaking integration of architecture and landscape. Rooted in the raw, volcanic terrain of Lanzarote, his abstract and pictorial work transformed the island’s dramatic geology into a poetic form of non-realist naturalism. Often described as the man who “built paradise in the ruins of hell,” Manrique became a leading figure in Spain’s contemporary informalist movement and a defining voice of modern art in the Canary Islands.

A passionate advocate for harmony between art and environment, he reshaped not only spaces but perspectives, establishing a lasting dialogue between nature, design, and human experience. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the World Prize for Ecology and Tourism and the Europa Prize. A true pioneer ahead of his time, his life and legacy are compellingly brought to life in Dr. Chantry’s elegant narrative.

The lectures will take place on Wednesday 8th April 2026 at the Espai la Senieta in Moraira at 11.00am (doors open at 10.15am) and at the Casa de Cultura in Plaça del Baix in the heart of the historic centre of Xàbia at 7.30pm (doors open at 6.45pm).

Both lectures are priced at 15 euros for guests (prepaid donation) but are free for members of The Arts Society and seats can be booked in advance by contacting the Arts Society by email at marinaalta@theartssociety.org or online here.
