Green light edging closer for long-awaited Denia–Gandía tram link
The Valencian regional government has allocated just over 100,000 euros for an initial planning and feasibility study.
The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón (PP), has proudly announced that progress is being made on the Gandía–Oliva–Dénia TRAM link, calling it an essential project for boosting connectivity, prosperity, and wealth in one of the Comunidad Valenciana’s most important tourist areas.
The head of the Valencian government has announced that the process to award the planning and feasibility study for the Gandía–Oliva–Dénia TRAM project has begun, with a budget of €101,000. This marks a key step forward in developing the railway link that will connect the regions of La Safor and La Marina Alta .
The initiative is set to strengthen one of the most prosperous areas in the Mediterranean and improve connectivity and integration between La Safor and La Marina Alta, while also addressing the long-standing demand to reconnect the two neighbouring regions that lost their rail service in 1974, the president said.
Mazón explained that the Gandia-Oliva-Dénia section, intended as part of the coastal railway, has been repeatedly requested to the central government. He emphasized the importance of cooperation on the Generalitat’s project, which is expected to reduce travel times between these towns, cut road traffic, and improve the quality of life for local residents.
He also expressed regret that the central government, which oversees railways, has dismissed the idea of implementing the coastal train or extending the commuter line south from Gandia. In response, the president stressed that it is the Generalitat Valenciana that will drive the coastal connection with the construction of the TRAM service from Dénia, while calling on the central government to provide funding for this vital regional project.
Mazón highlighted the regional government’s commitment to sustainable mobility through the improvement and modernization of the TRAM lines, describing it as an advanced and efficient transport system with zero noise and emissions. He highlighted the electrification of the line between Benidorm and La Vila as an example, a project in which €40 million has been invested.
The planning study will lay the groundwork for the infrastructure needed to develop the railway platform connecting Gandia, Oliva, and Dénia, in accordance with Law 6/2011 of April 1 on Mobility in the Comunidad Valenciana. It will serve as a preliminary document for preparing the detailed information study and the corresponding construction projects.
The study will examine various options for designing a TRAM rail platform linking the three towns, assessing the required public rail transport services along the Valencia-Alicante corridor. Its aim is to enhance regional, interregional, and long-distance mobility, while improving connectivity and territorial integration. Once the study is complete, construction work can move forward.
This new platform will expand the rail network, creating a safe, sustainable, and efficient public transport link connecting La Ribera Baixa, La Safor, La Marina Alta, La Marina Baixa, and L’Alacantí. It will establish a key infrastructure for structuring the Valencian coastline between Valencia and Alicante.
The development work for the Gandia-Oliva-Dénia line will include a detailed analysis of existing rail services and potential future expansions. This will cover different origins and destinations, service frequencies, travel times at regional, interregional, long-distance, and high-speed levels, and will explore the potential for collaboration with private operators.
