Xàbia remained under Moorish rule for just 24 hours. The Christian troops regrouped to retake the castle, reenacting the 770-year Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. After a thunderous gun battle on the beach, the ambassadors stepped in, paving the way for a final clash at the castle gates. The Christians emerged victorious, and fireworks lit up the night sky as the Red Cross flag once again flew proudly from the battlements.
