The Xàbia Social Centre held a small party today to commemorate the UN’s International Day of Older Persons, which is celebrated on October 1st each year to raise awarness about issues affecting the elderly as well as appreciate the contributions that they make to society.

The event was attended by the councillor responsible for Elderly Care, Rita Berruti, and mayor José Chulvi and began with a poetry recital by Rosa Cortell and Ramón Vidal who shared their own poems. This was followed by a performance by the choir of the senior citizen’s association which encouraged those present to join in and then everyone shared some snacks together.

The municipal officials highlighted the great role played by older people in society, especially in families, but also at a public level due to their involvement and experience. They also encouraged everyone attending the event to stay active and productive, both for their own well-being and for their community.
