Thursday 20th January 2022 – PRESS RELEASE with Mike Smith

The Department of Culture in Xàbia is clear about its New Year’s purpose: to continue to attract the public with a varied and high-quality cultural programme. Councillor Quico Moragues (Culture) presented details for the first four months, an agenda full of interesting proposals from different genres that include theatre, music, cinema, art and literature.

The councillor explained that all of the usual seasons will return: classical music, jazz music, theatre and children’s theatre, Valenciana cinema and Comedy Thursday, in addition to the festivals of Xàbia Folk and Ojos Rojos, which changes its dates and will be held in spring. The 125th anniversary of Sorolla’s arrival in Xàbia will also continue with the presentation of the book “Xàbia en la vida y obra de Joaquín Sorolla“, lectures and the inauguration of the bronze sculpture being completed by the artist Javier de Benito.

Moragues has also been very excited about the exhibition “El Siglo de Balenciaga” which will star in the artistic agenda of the summer and the high level of concerts scheduled both in the cycle of classical music (with the quartet Casulana, the quintet of the Philharmonic from Berlin, the sacred music show Il Dolce Incontro or the quintet Azahar Ensemble) as well as Jazz a 100 (with Juana Guillem & Jazz trio, Jeff Jerolamon jazz experience, the neo-soul group in Valencian led by Pete Lala, the quartet of Nacho Mañó or Valmuz).

In the theatre, humour will have all the prominence with performances such as that of the well-known comedian Emma Ozores, who will perform the play “El último que apague la luz” and shows like “De todas las bellas, las más bellotas“, “Va com va” by Marina Mulet and the theatrical comedy about emptied Spain “Las Mañas” by Teatre Artimaña. The comedy Thursday monologues feature Rocío Ladrón de Guevara, Darío Piera, Chely Capitán, Saray Cerro and Paco Enlaluna. There will also be various children’s performances, theatre, puppet shows and films within the Valencian cinema season.

The agenda is completed with exhibitions in all municipal galleries, already scheduled until the summer of 2023, and literary presentations, municipal publications, and events around reading promoted for the Semana del Libro, which this year is dedicated to Joan Fuster.

The councillor added that the department is still confirming details, so there may still be some surprises, and hinted that work is also being done to give the Xàbia Folk Festival, which will take place in May, a very powerful headliner to commemorate its 20th edition.

Moragues has encouraged everyone enjoy the culture being offered by the council, which will be present every weekend – except when there are fiestas – always with free access or very modest prices.

For many years, you’ve told us how much you love what we’re doing and some of you have even asked for ways to say thanks. For us, there really is nothing easier to show someone how much you appreciate their efforts than buying them a beer (or a wine; or even a coffee) – it’s so simple.
