Xàbia cleans up after violent storm

Avenida de Libertad remains closed in the Arenal as water draining from the surrounding areas collects in the area.

Xàbia has begun the clean-up after the incredible storm on Wednesday night. The cleaning contractors have begun to remove debris and stones that have been dragged onto several public roads by the rainwater.

Council staff are reviewing trees and walls that have collapsed as a consequence of the storm whilst an assessment is being made of the damage caused by the torrential rains, particularly in the coves of Portitxol and Granadella.

The water level in the Arenal zone means that the stretch of Avenida de Libertad between Calle Rennes and Camí Tamarits remains closed to traffic- The Department of Services has been controlling the drainage of this area since, although it hasn’t rained since the morning, it has become the natural collection point for water runoff from the areas of Saladar and Tosalet.

Council and security forces have met to develop coordination of the response until the weather risk alerts have been lifted by the state meteorological agency AEMET. Whilst the risk has been lifted in our area, it was raised to RED this afternoon for the zones north of Montgó until early this evening.
