The year in review: Our most-read news articles of 2021: Part 1

The coronavirus crisis has dominated the news over the past 12 months, but our readers have had a wealth of other news to digest. Check out numbers 11 to 20 of the most-read news articles on javeamigos.com.

Just like 2020, this year’s news has been dominated by the coronavirus pandemic and many of the most-read articles have been related to the evolution of both the spread of the virus as well as the progress of the vaccination campaign which began at the end of December 2020.

A review of the year made up of the most popular articles has the potential to end up to be a list of COVID news and we really don’t need reminding of that. Therefore, in creating our list, we have removed those articles and list only the local news articles which have been most popular with our readers.

20: Guardia Civil seizes 74 doses of cocaine from house in Xàbia

In July, Guardia Civil officers from Xàbia seized 74 doses of cocaine from a house in the municipality after receiving several complaints from people in the neighhourhood, arresting two people, an Italian man and a Polish woman. The search also found 12,270 euros in cash, 3.878 euros in cryptocurrencies in a digital wallet, false documentation, equipment suitable for cutting cocaine, and several high-quality watches.

19: Guardia Civil dismantles marijuana farm in Xàbia

In January, the Guardia Civil in Xàbia arrested an Englishman after discovering an indoor plantation of 1,152 marijuana plants as well as very sophisticated equipment for the treatment of the substances, a vehicle, and some 6.700 euros in small denominations. The investigations began when a real estate agency informed the police that a tenant had not paid the rent on a villa for several months and that he had been trying to locate the tenant several times, without success.

18: Emotional tribute to surfer Óscar Serra on the Arenal beach in Xàbia

In August, a large number of family, friends and lovers of surfing or the sea in general paid an emotional tribute to the surfer Óscar Serra at the tip of Arenal de Xàbia on the side facing Segundo Muntanyar. Those present who wore white shirts and flower pendants, jumped into the water with their boards along with some boats for their last farewell. 

17: Taylor Wimpey invests 14.4 million euros in new residential complex in Xàbia

UK-based property developers Taylor Wimpey is investing some 14.4 million euros in a new residential complex Essential, a project which began preparations in the spring on a plot in Avenida Trenc d’Alba opposite the Viveros Chorro garden centre.

16: National Geographic features the underwater discoveries in Portitxol

In March, the site of ancient anchorages from different times that surrounds the island of Portitxol, as well as the underwater remains found that show us that Xàbia was an important commercial port centuries ago, attracted the attention of the prestigious National Geographic magazine. 

15: Four restaurants in Xàbia feature in 2021 Guiá Repsol

In April, the Guía Repsol presented its Soles which distinguishes the best restaurants in Spain. Restaurante Bon Amb retained its three soles, the top award in the guide, whilst La Perla de Jávea and Restaurante Tula both retained their single sol accreditation. The Guía Repsol inspectors also included El Trinquete Bar-Restaurante in the 2021 guide in the recommended category.

14: Costas looks to remove everything artificial from Xàbia’s Primer Montañar

Residents of Xàbia have received a surprise at the end of March after it was confirmed that Costas wanted to return all sections of the Primer Montañar de Xàbia to their previous state. This was confirmed by mayor José Chulvi in response to a question from PP spokeswoman Rosa Cardona at the March plenary session of Xàbia Council.

13: Carrer Pic Tort in Xàbia is most expensive street in Comunidad Valenciana

In August, Idealista.com reported that Carrer del Pic Tort in the Granadella zone of Xàbia was the most expensive street in the Comunidad Valenciana with an average price of a property having been calculated at 3,080,409 euros.

12: Business owner in Granadella has two months to demolish illegal works

At the beginning of December, the Department of Urban Planning in Xàbia issued an order calling on the owner of one of the restaurants in Cala Granadella to request a license to restore urban planning legality and comply with a Supreme Court ruling.

11: Judge orders Ambolo villa built in green zone to be demolished

In late January, a judge finally gave Xàbia Council free rein to demolish a villa that was built next to the Cala Ambolo viewpoint, in compliance with a court ruling from the Supreme Court. In addition, the council had to compensate the owner with about 325,000 euros for the expropriation of the house, a price that was also set by a court.
