On Saturday night, Xàbia celebrated one of the most eagerly awaited events marking the start of the Fogueres de Sant Joan: the proclamation of the 2025 Quintà ‘La Desmadrà’. The evening was filled with emotion and tradition, as the town bid farewell to last year’s charges and warmly welcomed the new generation, highlighted by the crowning of Ainhoa Buigues as Fogueres Queen 2025.

The evening began with the procession of Quintà 2025 ‘La Desmadrà’, the guests and local authorities through the historic centre to the Plaza de la Constitución on a warm early June night. Many hundreds of seats were filled with family, friends, neighbours and curious onlookers; those who couldn’t secure one of the many white plastic chairs had to be content with standing around the edges of the presentation area to watch the evening’s events.

As has long been tradition, the members of the Quintà 2025 took to the stage in pairs to be welcomed as the main protagonists of this year’s festivities, the young women formally presented with their ceremonial sashes whilst the young men were handed a small token to mark this important milestone in their lives. As they took their places at the rear of the stage, they applauded their compatriots as they went through the same process until the stage was filled with more than 120 young people.

And then the big moment arrived. First of all, the two ladies-in-waiting were presented – Arantxa Ribes and María Mateo – and took their places ready for the arrival of the prime representative of the fiestas and of the town. After a short video, Ainhoa Buigues appeared at the foot of the lighthouse, applauded by her quintà and by the public in general. Slowly making her way to the front of the stage, she was presented with her commemorative sash, smiling all the time, often breaking out into excited laughter before moving with her ladies to take over the now-vacant thrones at the top of the stage.

As fireworks burst into the sky behind them, everyone stood to honour both the queens and her ladies-in-waiting as well as the court of honour, the sound of the pasadoble “Xàbia” followed by the fiesta anthem “Fogueres” which was sung with gusto by everyone present.
