In an institutional statement, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has stressed that “vaccination is the best weapon” in the fight against the coronavirus and called for “vaccines, vaccines and more vaccines” as the incidence rate in Spain rises above 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. He also confirmed the holding of an online conference of autonomous territory leaders to “study shared measures”.

Sánchez explained that the so-called ‘sixth wave’ of infections has different characteristics to that of last winter since, despite the number of infections being quite similar, hospital occupancy is much lower, thanks to the fact that the vaccines have been working. He claimed that about 38 million Spaniards are fully immunized whilst 80% of those over the age of 70 have received a third booster dose.

With regards to the vaccination of schoolchildren aged between 5 and 11 years, the president said that 5% of this group has already received the vaccine and that, last Friday, 500,000 doses were administered nationally. He also sent a message of support to all the health personnel who are carrying out this important process.

Finally, Sánchez insisted that other complementary measures, such as the use of a face mask and the required prevention measures, be maintained and conveyed a message of “tranquility and confidence” to all citizens of Spain.
