The municipal water company AMJASA has delivered a new water pump to the Bomberos Voluntarios de Balcón al Mar, the volunteer fire service that has been taking a more active role in fire-fighting in the area recently, not least when they were first on the scene of the fire in La Guardia at the beginning of October. Michael Nickel, commander of the volunteer fire service said that the new pump is more powerful than their previous apparatus and will allow up to eight hoses to be attached to it. It will also serve to help pump out flooded areas, another level of assistance that the volunteers have provided.

Essentially the primary fire-fighting unit in the area, this volunteer unit are often first to tackle local blazes, sometimes working late into the night to contain the flames or carefully monitor the aftermath. At the La Guardia fire, some of their equipment has become so damaged that it needed to be replaced and a local campaign was launched to raise the necessary funds to do so. AMJASA has stepped in to help by donating a special water pump valued at some 3,000 euros which can pump water under pressure to the location of the fires, which often break out in scrubland which can be difficult to reach.

AMJASA CEO Josep Lluis Henarejos said that the donation acknowledges the great work done by the volunteer fire-fighters, bringing a sense of security to those who live in the forested areas of Jávea such as Balcón al Mar, La Guardia and on the slopes of the Montgó. In addition, mayor José Chulvi added his praise of the service and announced that the town hall intends to increase municipal aid to the group.

BELOW: As local people and businesses work to raise essential funds for the Bomberos Voluntarios de Balcón al Mar, the group also received a cheque for 2,000 euros from the Original Charity Shop based in the Arenal to help with the replacement of damaged equipment.
