municipal water company AMJASA has delivered a new water
pump to the Bomberos Voluntarios de Balcón
al Mar, the volunteer fire service that has been
taking a more active role in fire-fighting in the area recently,
not least when they were first on the scene of the fire
in La Guardia at the beginning of October. Michael Nickel,
commander of the volunteer fire service said that the
new pump is more powerful than their previous apparatus
and will allow up to eight hoses to be attached to it.
It will also serve to help pump out flooded areas, another
level of assistance that the volunteers have provided.
the primary fire-fighting unit in the area, this volunteer
unit are often first to tackle local blazes, sometimes
working late into the night to contain the flames or
carefully monitor the aftermath. At the La Guardia
fire, some of their equipment has become so damaged
that it needed to be replaced and a local campaign was
launched to raise the necessary funds to do so. AMJASA
has stepped in to help by donating a special water pump
valued at some 3,000 euros which can pump water under
pressure to the location of the fires, which often break
out in scrubland which can be difficult to
CEO Josep Lluis Henarejos said that the donation acknowledges
the great work done by the volunteer fire-fighters,
bringing a sense of security to those who live in the
forested areas of Jávea such as Balcón
al Mar, La Guardia and on the slopes of the Montgó.
In addition, mayor José Chulvi added his praise
of the service and announced that the town hall intends
to increase municipal aid to the group.
As local people and businesses work to raise essential
funds for the Bomberos Voluntarios de Balcón
al Mar, the group also received a cheque for
2,000 euros from the Original Charity Shop based in
the Arenal to help with the replacement of damaged equipment.
