COUNCIL CALLS ON NIGHTSPOTS TO COMPLY WITH COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

javeamigos.com | COUNCIL CALLS ON NIGHTSPOTS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

After disturbing scenes of a blatant disregard for COVID-19 health and safety protocols at a popular Xàbia nightspot over the weekend which appeared on national television yesterday evening, the Council gathered together management from the town's nightspots as well as representatives from the hospitality and trade associations to call for more effort and commitment to comply with the necessary requirements to halt the spread of this devastating infection.

Mayor José Chulvi was supported by councillors Pepa Gisbert (Citizen Security) and Rita Berruti (Health) as he explained that data provided by the health authorities is showing that a large percentage of the recent resurgence in COVID-19 outbreaks in the Comunidad Valenciana and indeed across the rest of the country have been linked to the nightlife sector as well as family gatherings when the necessary protective measures against the infection have been largely forgotten. He called on the owners of the nightspots in Xàbia to become more aware of the situation and do their part in the fight against COVID-19.

He added that scenes such as those seen last weekend - in which the Council has already open disciplinary proceedings - cannot be repeated and has appealed for the collaboration of everyone to deal with unacceptable behaviour which works against everything that is being done to counter the health crisis across the country. He said that there will be an increased police presence and controls in areas outside of nightspots to help manage possible crowding and fine those who are not wearing face masks which is now mandatory in the entire Comunidad Valenciana.

He said that everyone had to work together "hand in hand" in the fight against COVID-19 since any outbreak of the virus will trigger protocols that will "drag everyone down" and affect the overall population and the local economy. "We are aware of the importance of [the nightlife sector] in the economy of Xàbia and how badly it has been affected in recent months. We don't want to see what has happened in Gandía (all nightspots have been closed down by the local authorities) so it is essential to get involved and comply [with the health protocols] without excuses."

The business community has shown its commitment to collaborate as much as possible and contribute to making Xàbia a safe municipality for all. In response to the meeting, the business associations have announced that they intend to contact all the associates to convey the importance of abiding with the regulations regarding COVID-19 and appealing with them to comply with them.
