COVID-19 CRISIS: THE MESSAGE IS SIMPLE - STAY AT HOME

javeamigos.com | COVID-19 CRISIS: THE MESSAGE IS SIMPLE - STAY AT HOME

As Xàbia enters the first day of extraordinary preventative measures put in place by the authorities to combat the COVID-19 disease, the Xàbia City Council held a coordination meeting to agree further actions designed to protect the local population. Mayor José Chulvi and councillor Pepa Gisbert (Security, Emergencies) met with heads of security forces such as the Policía Local and Guardia Civil as well as the voluntary bodies of the Protección Civil and Cruz Roja and María José Mulet, coordinator of the municipal health centres.

The local council has agreed the following:

* the closure of Parque Pinosol and all children's play areas and outdoor gym zones;
* the cleaning of points of high attendance with high pressure disinfectant products;
* suspension of the Thursday street market;
* the reinforcement of all information mechanisms to urge people to stay at home and minimise social contact.

The Council reiterates that the basic instruction is simple: stay at home. Only leave the house to carry out basic needs and cancel social activities with friends. And, above all, be aware that the virus can be active for up to nine hours so it is very important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap or disinfectant products after touching street furniture, door knobs, etc. that are for communal use.

The Policía Local has already started transmitting these instructions using public address systems from the early hours of this morning in such places as the Arenal promenade, requesting citizen responsibility, especially directed at people who have arrived from other areas of the country: they should remain inside their home and not contribute to the spread of the epidemic. Both the Policía Local and Guardia Civil are ensuring that bars, restaurants and leisure zones are complying with the regional government instruction to remain closed until further notice.

As already reported yesterday, the municipal offices, including the municipal water company AMJASA, will stop face-to-face interaction from Monday and both the EcoParque and Ramblars will be temporarily closed. In addition, the council has given instructions to the company contracted for rubbish collection to provide a minimal service so as not to compromise the entire workforce.

The Cruz Roja has made itself available to the health centre to take medicines and basic necessities to people who have to be isolated and lack support or family network.

Today, Saturday 14th March, the Spanish government declared a state of emergency for only the second time since democracy in a bid to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus in which citizens will be required to remain in their homes except in specific cases. On the issue of the movement of the population, the Government is preparing to approve a decree that will only allow people to leave their homes in the following cases:

* To buy food, pharmaceuticals and basic necessities;
* To travel to health centres;
* To travel to their places of work;
* To return to their place of normal residence;
* To visit the bank;
* To assist and care for the elderly, minors, dependants, people with disabilities or other vulnerable groups;
* Due to force majeure or need;
* For any other activity that is duly justified.

Through these instructions, it is hoped that citizens will retain some freedom of movement. The circulation of private vehicles on public roads will be allowed to carry out the aforementioned activities or to refuel at petrol stations or service stations. However it is expressly prohibited to leave the house for leisure purposes, such as day-trips and outings.

The state of emergency puts all security forces, including autonomous and local bodies, under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior for the protection of people, property and places and will be able to impose extraordinary services during the duration of the situation. Agents have been authorised to carry out searches and checks on people, goods, vehicles, premises and establishments as necessary and citizens are asked for their full collaboration and not to hinder the work of law enforcement officers in their line of duty. In addition, for effective compliance of the measures, the competent authorities may call on the support of the Armed Forces.
