The Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has received funding worth 15,000 euros from the European Union (EU) under the WiFi4EU programme that supports the installation of free Wi-Fi points in public spaces. Councillor Ximo Segarra (New Technologies) explained the council is planning the spaces in which to install this service and that the implementation will begin in the first quarter of 2020.

The WiFi4EU programme, worth almost 27 million euros, seeks to offer high-quality access to the Internet across the EU to citizens and visitors with municipalities committing to keep such networks active for at least three years. The funding can be used for equipment costs and installation of wireless Internet connection points with the council bearing the cost of connectivity, maintenance and operation of the equipment as well as ensuring that the minimum number of Access Points required are installed and that the network offers at least 30Mbps download speed. Xàbia is one of almost 1,800 municipalities across the European Union which has won the funding support to implement the service from over 11,000 applications received.
