TRIANA BRIDGE REOPENS TO PEDESTRIANS AFTER TECHNICAL INSPECTION
The project to build a new crossing is planned to begin in the short term

javeamigos.com | TRIANA BRIDGE REOPENS TO PEDESTRIANS AFTER TECHNICAL INSPECTION

The Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has decided to re-open the Triana bridge to pedestrian traffic after a technical inspection was carried out to assess its state after the recent storms which affected the region. On Friday morning, municipal technicians and an engineer, who has already recommended the complete demolition of the current bridge and a new crossing to be built in its place, inspected the concrete structure and framework of the bridge as well as the cracks on the road surface to assess its safety and has concluded that there has been no new damage to the infrastructure. Mayor José Chulvi was also able to see first hand the stage of the bridge which has badly damaged in the storms of October 2007.

After the inspection, it was decided that the condition of the bridge was safe enough for pedestrian traffic and as a result a passage would be enabled on the internal side of the bridge which has been assessed to be in the best condition; it was expected that this crossing would be opened last Friday 20th September. The crossing will remain closed to vehicle traffic until a new bridge is constructed, work on which is expected to begin in the short term. Mayor José Chulvi explained that the tender for this project would be issued this week and that the town would finally have the new crossing that it has been seeking for more than a decade.

The previous winning contractor Levantina Ingeniería y Construcción abandoned the project just weeks after being awarded the contract in early July 2018, citing safety deficiencies, claims which were ultimately rejected by the technical department responsible. In May 2019 the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia formally cancelled the contract with the firm, retaining the 17,000 euro bond placed by the company.
