Jávea slipped to defeat to Pego CF in their opening
game of the 2019/2020 season, a goal from Rico 13 minutes
from time securing maximum points for the visitors.
This first Marina Alta derby of the campaign began with
possession changing constantly in the midfield but neither
side was able to create any clear changes early in the
game, leaving both goalkeepers as mere spectators. The
first chance came for the home midway through the first
half when Cristian met a free-kick well at the far post
but he put his header wide of the goal. The second
real chance came just before the break when Aldo fired
over the bar after some great work from Renzo in the
centre of the park.
the second-half Jávea went close again to opening
the scoring when Guerrero met a great cross into the
box from Ayoze but his header was diverted wide for
a corner. There was little more excitement until the
69th minute when Pego were reduced to ten men after
Pastor was shown a straight red for a clumsy clattering
tackle on Guerrero from behind. But it was the
visitors who adapted better and with their first attack
the dismissal they scored what would turn out to be
winner, Rico taking advantage of a confused defensive
line to blast past the keeper.
Pego have to thank goalkeeper Alguilar for maintaining
that lead for the custodian was on top form to keep
the ball out of his net, first to block a shot from
Paolo who then smashed the rebound onto the crossbar
and then twice from Ayoze who had two clear chances
to pull the home side level but couldn't beat the keeper.
