Xàbia keeper Antonio Sivera crowned European champion

Tuesday 2nd July 2019

Young goalkeepers in Xàbia have been benefited from first class coaching from Adrián Ortolá (FC Barcelona) and Celso Alcázar (UEFA Pro Goalkeeping Coach) in the second goalkeeping training course held at the municipal football stadium. The training was watched by mayor José Chulvi and councillor Alberto Tur (Sports) who also took the opportunity to check out the new playing surface that has recently been laid to replace the previous artificial grass.

Some 32 students aged between 7 and 18 years old have been learning and developing with the help of an experienced goalkeeper from Xàbia who is on the books at the Catalan giants but has recently ended a spell on loan at Deportivo de la Coruña which missed out on an immediate return to the First Division after defeat to RCD Mallorca in the promotion play-offs. The 25-year-old wanted to build on the success of the first course last summer and offer the young custodians another chance to enjoy the training and improve their own performances.

Ortolá was joined the Celso Alcázar, a UEFA Pro Goalkeeping coach who has been on the books at Hércules CF, Atletico Madrid as well as Bedworth United in England and CD Jávea goalkeeper Edu Samblas who helped the local club to record the best defensive record in the league last season.

The training has been taking place on the new artificial playing surface at the football ground in the Freginal zone, a municipal investment of some 160,000 euros to replace the old surface which was looking tired after ten years of constant use, forming part of the continued commitment by the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia to improve sporting infrastructure in the town as well as conditions for playing and training for all ages and levels.

Another Xàbia goalkeeper has been celebrating this weekend after being crowned a European champion. Antonio Sivera, who plays for La Liga side Deportivo Alavés, featured between the sticks for Spain as they beat Germany 2-1 in the final of the 2019 UEFA Under-21 Championships in Italy. His recent performances have results in several Spanish and European clubs expressing an interest in signing him, not least Real Madrid and Valencia CF.
